LAWRENCE — Like a welcome house guest, Texas Tech coach Bob Knight was on his best behavior. The capacity crowd of 16,300 in Allen Fieldhouse jeered Knight before Saturdays game against Kansas, many waving signs that read “Red Rager,” and again on the several occasions when the coach argued with officials. ONE OF Britains biggest garden centre companies is selling furniture made from teak sold by the oppressive Burmese military regime. Tables, chairs and other goods made from the wood are on sale at dozens of branches of Wyevale Garden Centres around the country. The revelations come ahead of the biggest weekend for garden centres, with millions of pounds expected to be spent over the Easter holiday. Many of Wyevales 114 stores sell furniture sets made by Neptune. Some of the teak used to make Neptunes garden furniture is bought directly from the State Peace and Development Council (SPDC), which rules Burma.

Finnish industrial group Fiskars Corporation said on Thursday (2 September) that its subsidiary Fiskars Brands Inc would focus on its branded core consumer products and was divesting its non-core garden furniture manufacturer Syroco in the US. THE internet auction service Ebay has provided the inspiration for a new website which will allow the public to rate the work of plumbers and other tradesmen. The idea, called Guaranteed Electronic Market (GEM), is the brainchild of TV presenter and entrepreneur Wingham Rowan and will be presented at a seminar in London this week. The new website will offer the verdicts of previous customers on quality, availability and price of tradesmen, who will be given a grade based upon what other customers have said about their work, which will be continually updated.

A full assessment of the success of the CRA and the fair lending programs would require a comprehensive costbenefit analysis. Data limitations preclude this. We can, however, evaluate lending patterns and check for trends that appear consistent with the goals of the regulations. To do this, we compared aggregate lending trends before and after the recent changes in regulatory enforcement, changes in home ownership rates across minority groups over time, and the degree of lending to targeted versus nontargeted groups. To analyze the effect on the aggregate level of mortgage activity, we estimated the relationship between the quarterly growth rate of the dollar value of mortgage originations and variables thought to explain this trend (e.g., gross domestic product growth, changes in mortgage rates, the growth rate of the Consumer Price Index, and variables to capture intra-year seasonal effects) from 1970 to 1995. We found no evidence to support the contention that mortgage originations were stronger following the CRA and fair lending regulatory changes in the 1990s. To assess the extent to which the supply of mortgage credit to minorities increased in the 1990s, we examined home ownership rates over time. The potential relaxation of credit constraints induced by the new regulatory environment should have caused minority mortgage originations and the minority home ownership rate to increase. Figure 2 displays home ownership rates from 1976 to 1994. While there are slight fluctuations, there are no large changes. The home ownership rates for minority groups for the 1990s are similar to (or lower than) those observed in the mid- to late-1980s. Although blacks have experienced the largest growth in mortgage originations during the 1990s, this apparently has had little effect on home ownership rates.
Banking giant Lloyds TSB is still on the lookout to buy a mortgage lender or insurer, chief executive Mr Peter Ellwood said yesterday. Mr Ellwood, speaking after addressing the annual meeting of the British Chambers of Commerce, said the insurance market in Britain was “very fragmented”. While Lloyds TSB was a big player, it had less than ten per cent of the market. “Therefore that is one of the areas where we have been looking for some time and we continue to look,” he said, adding that the mortgage business was also “under the microscope”. Asked if Lloyds TSB had made an approach to Birmingham Midshires Building Society - the subject of a pounds 780 million bid by Halifax but also rumoured to be a Lloyds TSB target - Mr Ellwood said he could not comment on specific firms but it had “looked at everything”. He said the European single currency would bring “a greater level of consolidation in mainland Europe among financial services companies” and that this could subsequently lead to mergers between continental firms and their British neighbours. But Mr Ellwood said the development of pan-European banks would be in the medium to long term rather than the short term and Lloyds TSB had “no imminent plans to do a deal there”, although it always looked at opportunities. Lloyds TSB has been widely rumoured as a potential bidder for private medical insurer BUPA. It already owns the Cheltenham Gloucester building society. Apart from specialist niche markets such as health, Lloyds TSB is also seen as a possible contender for a tie-up with a larger life insurance group, industry sources said. Mr Ellwood dismissed recent newspaper reports that Lloyds TSB planned to merge its Lloyds Bank and TSB branches, explaining that the group was rearranging its structure, with changes to a number of area offices planned for next year. “The thing we were talking about was to say there will be a different number of area directors, this is how we are going to configure the branches from next year. It was not about the closure of branches,” he said. While Lloyds TSB is always closing branches - 150 shut their doors last year — Mr Ellwood said there were no “immediate plans for a huge reduction in the branch network”. Machines and computers will also continue to reduce the number of jobs in the industry. “We will see further contraction in the financial services sector, as a result principally of greater automation and greater use of technology,” he said. He also predicted greater consolidation in Britains financial services industry, with banks, insurance companies and building societies all in the frame. But while players were constantly sizing each other up as possible merger or acquisition targets, the numbers had to add up and create value for shareholders, Mr Ellwood said. And unless the Government had a change of heart about the rules governing market share, there was little prospect of large scale banking consolidation. Mr Ellwood admitted that while Lloyds TSB was confident of maintaining its market share, he was looking over his shoulder to new competitors such as computer firms, US-style brokerages and the supermarket borrowers.

On June 21, law enforcement personnel from around the nation gathered at the Mississippi Agriculture and Forestry Museum in Jackson to discuss a hot topic - heavy equipment theft. Sponsored by FBI-LEEDA and the National Equipment Register (NER), the summit drew personnel from 45-50 law enforcement agencies from as far away as Denver who wanted to learn more about the growing problem of heavy equipment theft and how to fight it. Joey Gonce is director of the agriculture and livestock theft bureau at the Mississippi Department of Agriculture (MDAC). His main focus at the MDAC is agriculture theft, but he has fielded calls from construction companies that are missing equipment, and as a retired highway patrolman, hes seen it all.

The forerunner of todays guitars were single-string bows developed during early human history. In sections of Asia and Africa, bows of this type have been unearthed in archaeological digs of ancient civilizations. Spiceworld - The Movie (PG) Forget Arnie, Sly, Demi, Disney or even that Cruise geezer. With Christmas wrapped and their chart-busting Too Much predictably slotted in at No. 1, a very timely debut dose of big- screen Girl Power succeeds the Full Monty as this year-ends British film biggie.
Snobbishness and condescension ooze from every sentence of Mr. Douthats essay, and his one-size-fits-all dismissal of the films screened at the American Film Renaissance festival (the festivals movies were often awful in fascinating ways, but they were awful nonetheless) strikes me as typical liberal shallowness. How could he make such a blanket statement if he had seen the excellent documentary Entertaining Vietnam, a film that has won best-documentary awards in multiple film festivals around the U.S.? And it appears he did not take the time to see our documentary, Silent Victory (which has received positive reviews from audiences liberal and conservative), before painting us with the same negative brush. Not only that, but apparently Mr. Douthat felt he had to make snide remarks about the physical characteristics of festival founders Jim and Ellen Hubbard (bouffant hair, heavyset man with a hangdog air). Of what relevance could his opinion of what they look like be to the content of the films in the festival?

A MYSTERY slasher has destroyed two wedding dresses with a knife in a callous attack on a Solihull charity shop - the third of its kind in recent weeks. Staff at the Acorn Childrens Hospice Shop in Stratford Road, Shirley now fear they may be targeted by the knifeman after similar attacks on shops in Northfield and Acocks Green. A sweet flying delta wing Theres something eye-catching about a “delta-wing” type of aircraft. The mystique of an airplane with no fuselage or empennage piques our curiosity and challenges our instincts concerning aerodynamics. The Laser Models Laser Arrow delta wing is one in a new line of models distributed by Great Planes, and I quickly accepted the offer to review it. The kit consists of several sheets of laser-cut balsa and light plywood. To minimize damage, the wood sheets are secured to the bottom of the box with cardboard tabs. The hardware package is complete and includes pinned hinges, screws, devises, control horns, a fuel tank and other assorted parts. There is also a Nyrod (for throttle) and threaded-wire pushrods. The Laser-Lock building technique is very interesting; no plan is provided, nor is one needed. Instead, the building process relies on accurately laser-cut parts and interlocking tab-and-slot construction to ensure proper alignment.
Universal Laser Systems Inc. ULS introduces its line of CO2 Lasers for the OEM market. With a 75-watt Laser, the Lasers come in air- or water-cooled options, as well as multiple mounting options. (AP) — A Baptist minister whose fall from grace began with a fire his wife set at a home he had secretly bought with his mistress will walk out of prison today and head directly to the pulpit. The Rev. Henry J. Lyons expects to be rededicated by other ministers at a ceremony Sunday and then preach a sermon at the First Baptist Institutional Church in Lakeland, about 55 miles northeast of St. Petersburg, his attorney, Larry Hardaway, said. Wildly popular and charismatic, Lyons was at the height of his power as pastor of Bethel Metropolitan Baptist Church and president of the National Baptist Convention 1997, when Deborah Lyons set fire to the house.

Hypnotherapy is the therapeutic use of hypnosis. In hypnotherapy, hypnosis is used by psychotherapists to modify a patients behavior. Comment: PROM affects 10-20% of all pregnancies. It is the main known cause of preterm delivery and is associated with increased rates of neonatal and maternal morbidity and mortality. Vitamin C plays a role in the synthesis of collagen, which is involved in maintaining the mechanical strength of the chorioamniotic membranes. The results of the present study indicate that supplementing with 100 mg/day of vitamin C beginning in the 20th week of gestation decreased the incidence of PROM by 74% in Mexican women with borderline-low dietary vitamin C intake. Whether vitamin C supplementation would reduce the incidence of PROM in women whose dietary intake of vitamin C is higher should be the topic of future investigation. Casanueva E, et al. This letter from the CRIF-Regional Drug Information Centre in Milan reports an increase in the number of inquiries from pregnant women about risks to the fetus after exposure to vitamin A. The center received 22 such inquiries, 15 from the women themselves and seven from their physicians. All of the women took daily supplements of vitamin A at above-RDA levels. The mean dose was 70,000 IU (range 25,000-90,000 IU) for a mean of 44 days (range 7-180 days). Only one of the women had an appropriate medical indication for vitamin A supplementation (vitamin A deficiency). Six women took the vitamin in an effort to treat neurological disorders and five took it to treat fibrocystic breast disease; the efficacy of vitamin A in the treatment of these conditions has not been demonstrated. Of seven infants born to these women, none showed any malformations.The authors suggest that these queries should be regarded as sentinel events, signaling an increased need for information about vitamin A teratogenicity in both the medical and lay communities. It is only a matter of weeks, too, till the England football XI continues its confused and stuttering attempts to qualify for the 2008 European championships, so easily the most apt holiday read for football obsessives looking to limber up for impending tribulations is the 300-page impeachment by the games veteran sage, Brian Glanville, who turns beady eye, spikey quill and exasperated despair on the flawed and mostly hapless band of fellows responsible for guiding over the last half-century successive underachieving (and nearly always extremely boring) England teams. Glanvilles publisher Headline bestows the desolate chronicle, England Managers (£18.99) with the sub-heading The Toughest Job in Football. Only tough, I fancy, because the string of incumbents (with one knightly exception) since the 1950s have made the job description so by being so ruddy mediocre in the first place. MAKING ITS OWN RULES The National Futures Association (NFA) has approved a new forex rule and several rule amendments meant to help the NFA regulate fraud against entities on which it had no jurisdiction before. The changes are also independent of the CFTC reauthorization, which is focusing on forex regulation and CFTC jurisdiction regarding non-futures contracts. The new rule, Compliance Rule 2-39, prohibits all NFA members who introduce retail forex customers to or manage retail forex accounts with any counterparty from engaging in illegal off-exchange transactions or fraud. The rule also requires members to supervise their employees and agents. These requirements previously applied only to members who were doing business with forex dealer members, and now associates who conduct retail forex business with other counterparties are subject to the same requirements as members.
It harkens back to the days when banks offered toasters and televisions for opening a Certificate of Deposit. Is this what the forex retail environment is coming to? This kind of account-opening incentive might be a passing phase for firms looking for a competitive edge, but the real contest in forex is not participating in some marketing game, but between the forex traders and themselves. Every day the forex trader pits his or her trading insight against the market and tries to achieve winning trades. Yet, if this daily trading contest was to be formalized into a series of competitions, what would it look like? First there would be the simulation phase, where the trader tests skills and strategies that would be used in real trading. After a period of simulation, there would be a mini-account process whore real money Wt)LiId be ut risk. Finally, mere would be a trading competition with big lots. At this level the adrenaline starts flowing when each pip can result in a win or loss of $10.00. It certainly adds up for any size account.

Rodent control is taking some interesting and not so encouraging turns. There is an initiative that will be introduced in California on the November 1998 ballot (assuming it gets the 500,000 signatures needed, which is a slam dunk in California). It is called an Initiative to Ban Cruel Traps. This initiative, in a nutshell, will make it illegal to use a body gripping trap. one that grips the mammals body or body part, including, but not limited to, steel-jawed leghold traps, padded-jaw leghold traps, Conibear traps, and snares. This initiative also states that, it is illegal for any person, including employees of the federal, state, county or municipal government, to use or authorize the use of any steel-jawed leghold trap, padded or otherwise, to capture any game mammal, fur-bearing mammal, non-game mammal, protected mammal, or any dog or cat.Now, stop and reread that paragraph and think about it for a minute. This initiative decides for us that we cant control agricultural fur-bearing pests any longer. For that matter, it specifically states that you cant trap anything that has fur on it for any reason, and that the U.S. Fish Wildlife Service, State Department of Fish Game and your local county ag commissioner or county trapper cant do it either. It does make provision for the protection of human health and safety (pretty considerate - you know how vicious those gopher and mole attacks on children have been lately), and it will allow you to use mouse traps in your basement. Oh, and by the way, it introduces two chemicals that can no longer by used - Compound 1080 and sodium cyanide. What are these used for? Well, its not rodent control. The state has been experimenting with these two chemicals for coyote control. They make a collar to put around a lambs neck. If the animal is unfortunate enough to be a victim of a coyote attack and the coyote punctures the collar its lights out for the sheep killer. The point here is precedent - get these two and then work your way on to household chemicals for insect and rodent control and sweep everything up in between.Since this is not a political editorial, all I can say is watch out for this one. Agriculture will lose big time, so tell a friend and lets make sure that we dont get tied down by bad law written by extremists. I think it is very important that we dont make our decision based on whats on TV. Hollywood is anti-trapping and they have a lot of money to spend to support their position. If you want a recent case history lesson you may look at the fine State of Colorado, which had a similar initiative pass last year by a 51% margin. After the smoke cleared, it was disclosed that Hollywood spent just a little over a quarter million dollars to promote the initiative. All the local state and county representatives, combined with the agriculture and fur trapping industries, could muster was $48,000, and they lost.

Its been a long rime since I have reviewed gopher control in the vineyard. Its appropriate, given the time of year, so I thought we would take a look at it this month. All three rodents damage vines by chewing on them. New plantings and established vines are susceptible to both root damage and girdling. In addition to plant damage, these rodents will also move enough dirt to redirect water away from vines and literally into a hole in the ground. Ground squirrels specifically will chew drip lines and damage emitters. I have observed squirrels chewing things for no other reason than the fact that they are there. Control of these pests is broken into three fairly broad categories: biological, chemical and trapping.

But this doesnt have to be the case, argues Stewart. Her book points to the fact that low oestrogen levels can be associated with this particular problem, and as a result it seems that certain food types can actually help to shift the bulk. Along with exercise (of course), Stewart suggests that sufferers top up on phytoestrogens, a type of oestrogen that mainly occurs in pulses, linseeds, and other plant food. Stewart also has plenty of suggestions for skin problems. The Alabama State Nurses Association has expanded its legal representation program to provide legal services for any ASNA member brought before the Alabama Board of Nursing on a matter affecting the nurses license.Previously, ASNA has provided members one hours free legal consultation but under the new program a nurse who receives a letter of investigation from the Board of Nursing will be provided a lawyer through the administrative hearing.ASNA attorney Don Eddins of Auburn said the Board routinely investigates complaints and even the most competent registered nurse is not immune from Board scrutiny.

Nursing home care in Utah is improving, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services reported Wednesday. Many of those improvements were linked directly by care center administrators to a quality improvement project through HealthInsight, Medicares Quality Improvement Organization in Utah. The organization is part of the national Nursing Home Initiative, which focuses on raising standards of care in nursing homes across the country and giving consumers more comparison information.
A specialty furniture manufacturer and retailer will open a showroom this fall in the Village Park Shopping Center, filling part of the vacancy left by the June 1 closure of Bollingers Books. Dallas-based Leather Center is spending about $50,000 to renovate 5,000 square feet at 10505 N. May Ave. Leasing agent Carl Archiniaco, vice president of Harrison Levy Co., said he will target other home improvement merchants to fill the shopping centers vacancies. He is already talking with a gift shop and framing gallery. “We hope to build around the home improvement theme within the shopping center,” Archiniaco said. “This is a theme that has been proven in many successful specialty shopping centers.”

The upswing in the economy has meant better business for office furniture and equipment dealers this year. However, some dealers around the county say that some businesses are still looking for ways to stretch a buck when buying for the office. According to the Business and Institutional Furniture Manufacturers Association, office furniture buying in the United States shrank in 2001, 2002 and 2003. The association expects to see a 5.1 percent increase in sales this year and is projecting a 9.3 percent increase next year, the best since 2000.

I took it to a couple of dry cleaners, and none was very encouraging. Any ideas? –Laura L. A MYSTERY slasher has destroyed two wedding dresses with a knife in a callous attack on a Solihull charity shop - the third of its kind in recent weeks. Staff at the Acorn Childrens Hospice Shop in Stratford Road, Shirley now fear they may be targeted by the knifeman after similar attacks on shops in Northfield and Acocks Green. Police are now investigating after the culprit struck on Wednesday afternoon and used either a knife or razor blade to slash the bodice of a new wedding dress.
